Boo-yah!! Happy Halloween Coco Cakers!

An adorable and fun last minute order from Andrea, ordered for her "moms and tots" Halloween bash. So cute. Andrea was hoping for a modern take on a Halloweeny-type cupcake... so we went with some jackolanterns and a clean, modern, white and ghosty look: white fondant "BOO" engraved cupcakes! The cupcakes were the ever-popular Brown Velour flavour -- dark chocolate cupcake with vanilla creamcheese frosting. My personal favourite. I could sit on the couch and hoover them if I let myself!! But I won't, gosh darnit.

This year I am so excited about Halloween day... I booked the whole day off so I could spend it with my niece and nephews!! I'm planning on making some wicked Halloween treats and then going trick-or-treating with them. Man I still remember the sheer excitement of Halloween when I was a kid. Months thinking about costumes, and finally the big day arrives... a parade in the school gym wearing your costumes, candy all day, rushing home after school wishing every hour would pass quicker so night would fall. An early dinner, then jackets on top of costumes and out the door! Hours later, a bag brimming with hard-earned Trick-or-Treat candy after a long cold night of knocking on doors (haha)... hot chocolate with mini marshmallows and fireworks in our backyard, a feeling of tiredness but still lingering excitement as you fall asleep, dreaming of all the candy you're going to stuff your face with tomorrow...!

...and... here is a picture of me from last year, with my little nephew Brody and little niece Kensie in their last year's costumes... heehee! Not to worry, two minutes later I had distracted Brody with Kensie's bumbleebee wings and he was as happy as a...fish.

Happy Halloween everyone... hope you all have tons o' fun!

Sandeep & Nishidha! Wedded Bliss!

Social networking sites can really reunite you with those really great people you remember from high school, friends who you didn't quite keep in touch with but you remember as being awesome. People like crazy Sandeep M! I always remember Sandeep as being smart, funny and somewhat goofy. Extra tall and always making some hilarious deadpan remark in his deep, cartoonish voice. So it was great to meet up again on a certain social networking site a year or so ago. Sandeep soon also noticed that my current occupation happened to be cake-making, and he and his fine lady happened to be getting married on the best date ever, 10/10/10!!! (though some Chinese would say 08/08/08 is the best day ever, heehee!).

I made 300 delicious cupcakes, plus a cutting cake and 100 matching flags for Sandeep and Nishidha's wedding party (well, one of their wedding parties! -- the wedding party lasted for 7 days!). Dark chocolate cupcakes, mango cupcakes (a requested flavour from S&N) and vanilla cupcakes with two tone turquoise and green buttercream rosettes.

Sandeep has the sweetest parents... and delivering the cupcakes took me back into the 1990s when I was in high school into my old neighborhood and familiar haunts. Many of my pals lived around where I was delivering so it really made me jog down memory lane! I can't believe so many years have passed since high school. It's so nice to see how well Sandeep is doing and what a fine human being he has turned out to be. I can tell he and Nish are so in love and I am sure have so much fun together. It's all anyone can hope for!

Congratulations you two! Thank you for having Coco Cake be a part of your wedding!

Baby Shower Mini Cupcakes with Custom Flags

These little custom made baby-faced cupcake toppers I made crack me up with their different expressions! These toppers are what makes the difference between regular little mini cupcakes and an extra special array of mini cupcakes! Nicole ordered these for her cousin's baby shower... vanilla mini cupcakes in silver liners with vanilla creamcheese frosting in pale green and pale yellow palettes.

Perfectly adorable!

My Favourite Cake Lately: Laura's Forest Themed Birthday Cake!

kawaii!! my favourite cake that i've made lately! ^_^

This Coco Cake specialty cake has a real party-time Canadiana sunny Fall day vibe. I think that's what I was feeling when I made this cake... the sun was streaming in the windows and I was wishing I could be outside to enjoy the lovely crisp Fall sun... ! Ian and Jeanie requested a forest-themed cake for Ian's forest-working sis Laura. They also hoped for the addition of a bear and a moose... forest-y type animals... so I made them wearing toques and scarves and human clothing.

I had just made a salted caramel vanilla cake the week prior and I suggested it to Ian as a flavour, which he responded enthusiastically to! So inside this crazy colorful forest cake: layers of vanilla cake with a salted caramel filling and caramel buttercream!

I seriously think this cake is so cute and I was sad to think about it getting cut up and eaten! Haha. Oh well. Someone just needs to order another cake of this style... with animals wearing human clothing, that is!

Thanks J & I for the great order! Happy Birthday to Laura!

Science Themed Birthday: Einstein Cupcakes!

Did anyone else have to dissect a cow eyeball in grade 8? I remember our crotchety old Science teacher bringing out the batch of eyeballs bobbing around in that unmistakable pickled stench of formaldehyde. Pretty disturbing stuff... yet fascinating of course. Do kids still do that in high school? Or is it all digital dissection and hovercrafts now?? ;)

I loved this order. Lani contacted me with a request: her son Adrian wanted a "science" themed birthday. How CUTE is that?? I remember getting a microscope for Christmas when I was in grade 6. Best present ever!!! Woodbugs, fingernails, hair pulled from my head, earthworms... everything got the microscopic treatment. Great present, mom and dad!! I wish I still had it.

Anyhoo, Lani wanted me to do some sort of Einstein-y cupcakes -- Albert Einstein that is. Thank goodness Einstein has such a specific caricature - although I guess he really did have crazy wiry puffy grey hair, bushy eyebrows and a big old moustache! I really loved how the fondant topper Einsteins turned out, and 2 out of 3 friends I showed them too immediately said "Einstein!!" (there's always the fear that people won't know who it is). The cupcakes were vanilla with dark chocolate buttercream, in red and white striped liners (because Adrian's fave colour is red).

Too cute! Happy Birthday Adrian!

Pretty Wedding Amongst The Woods

Alex and Steve had a lovely wedding amongst the woodsy background of Simon Fraser University. Coco Cake made some pretty cupcakes for the occasion! Raspberry topped Berry Good cupcakes, dark chocolate cupcakes with chocolate buttercream and Lemon Frill (lemon cupcakes with lemon creamcheese frosting).

I couldn't help but snap some pics of the decor. Beer and hockey seemed to be the shared love for the newlyweds!! Very Canadian! I also just love the trend of having wedding photos of the bride and groom's parents' weddings. So cute and special, evoking nostalgia but also the many many years ahead, creating a lifetime of memories and growing old together.

Many congratulations to you both, Alex and Steve!
