Brown Velour has been harshing on my mind lately. It's a dark chocolate cupcake with vanilla creamcheese frosting. Coco Cake's take on the Red Velvet cupcake. Oh, it is taunting me with its deliciousness. I'm not one to toot the old horn too often but there's something magically delicious in these little cupcake devils I've created! Good thing I've taken up running in the last month, with the hope of running my first half-marathon in the Spring!

Good times at the Blim market in February, a beautiful bright and spacious new location at Heritage Hall, and the curated selection of vendors are all top-notch! Got to see lots of my art and craft buddies (something I look forward to!) and I got to meet and greet some blog readers and regular Coco Cake customers! Thanks so much for coming out, and saying hi too!

This month I shared my table with the ridiculously adorable Jamie Anderson, who had the cutest stuff-- party hats made from select vintage papers (perfect for bridal showers, kid's birthday parties and stagettes, methinks!) and gocco-printed party invites. Loved sharing a table with a buddy and hope to do it again soon! Next Blim market where you can pick up a party pack of Coco Cake cupcakes is March 28th!

Yay... along with cupcakes, did you know Coco Cake also enjoys tackling the task of artisan ICE CREAM too? Check out my Ice Cream blog here!

Grey Cat!

I've heard of the eponymously monikered Grey Cat from several reliable cat-stoked sources, and I must say Grey Cat may well be the coolest cat I've seen in a while. Though I've never met him in person, I've seen online albums featuring Grey Cat and man he is a real cool cat. Chantelle contacted me a month or so ago with a special request: something super special for her husband Darcy's 30th birthday party! She sent me a whole list of Darcy's favourite things, and we emailed back and forth different ideas here and there... I always think of Darcy wearing a red plaid flannel shirt so I suggested plaid cupcakes... and then she mentioned his deep love for their cat, Grey Cat!

I loved doing this cake, in fact I got a little attached to its cute little cake face and it was sad for me to see it go... ! This Coco Cake specialty cake was dark chocolate, filled with chocolate ganache and frosted with vanilla buttercream, then covered in hand-tinted grey fondant, and decorated with fondant eyes, whiskers, etc.

Happy 30th Birthday Darcy, hope you liked the cake version of Grey Cat! Crank the Depeche Mode, and enjoy your 30th birthday year! :)

Celebrate Life

Hi everyone.. well I have had the most stressful time lately... my beloved dad had to have emergency heart surgery last Saturday evening. He is doing well now and in recovery, but it has been a very stressful time for me and my family as you can well imagine. Some higher-ups were looking out for my dad Gerry Sung, as he is on the road to recovery.

My dad-- how I love him so! Remember his blog? May as well check it out now. Leave a comment too, he would be happy to read it...

In Coco Cake land, the wonderful Alanna (remember her monkey themed wedding?) ordered Oly/Squatchi themed cupcakes for her own father, who, on Monday, ran a leg of the Vancouver Olympic torch relay! She also requested one cupcake to look like her dad. Let's see if you can figure out which one it is...

The sweet and stylish Maki had a birthday this past week too, and her good friend Sacha ordered some lovely matcha green tea buttercream cupcakes to celebrate... Maki sent me the sweetest email afterward.

Cupcakes can really make people smile... corny but true...

So to everyone, everywhere, I say... celebrate life!!!

Photobooth Vancouver was there! Sharon and I, and me and my cousin Michael (who is getting married in June, in California)

Pretty girls selling pretty things! I loved their mannequin heads.

Boy, I had fun at the Indie I Do wedding fair at my funny stripey little Coco Cake cupcakes booth! Organized by the hardworking cuties at Blue Olive Photography and Lotus Events, Indie I Do celebrated its second year of "indie" wedding ideas, showcasing some great local wedding vendors! Beautiful letterpress, arty and crafty event planning, reworked vintage veils, 1950s inspired hair pieces and fashion, green-friendly invitation design, gorgeous florals and more...

My dear pal and vegan chef extraordinaire Sharon was my right hand woman throughout the day-- we served up mini cupcakes for sampling, in three flavours: dark chocolate with vanilla buttercream, Lemon Frill (lemon cupcakes with lemon creamcheese frosting!) and Coconut Dream (coconut cupcakes with vanilla creamcheese frosting and toasted-by-me coconut!)

My plan was to do a fairly non traditional wedding set-up: blue and yellow vintagey themed, with two little yellow lovebirds made of fondant. Lemon cupcakes and coconut cupcakes made up the display in matching yellow and blue and white striped cupcake liners, and I handmade some little blue flags from vintage-look plaid paper to complete the vibe. It turned out pretty darn cute!!

Extreme props alert to Sharon for helping me all day (you're the best, Shabba!), Rafael for helping me set up and take down, and to my mommy too for bringing us lunch and snacks from Whole Foods!! Oooh I'm spoiled. All in all a great day, everyone was wonderfully friendly and I met lots of new vendor friends as well as some cute and adorable brides (and a few grooms!).

Yay! Fun times... xo
