Princess Cake & Cupcakes!

A sweet order I had in December-- a cake and matching cupcakes with a princess theme, but also a "brown princess" theme for half-African Kalima! I thought it all turned out so pretty. I really do love doing cakes and matching cupcakes! The cake is a 7 inch dark chocolate cake and the cupcakes were vanilla with vanilla buttercream. I love the big old puff-sleeves on Princess Kalima's dress- these days new-school princesses are all skanked out in low-cut dresses and Miley Cyrus-y "I'm 13 going on 45" celebrity-grubbing salacious outfits. Princess Kalima is a very classy princess, with a high neckline and delightfully oversized puff-sleeves!

Scottish Animals for a 60th Birthday!

Growing up in Burnaby BC, one of my best friends in the world was my pal Kaila (now Kaleb). Endless hours of hanging out, playing sports together, lining up and going to see the premiere of Wayne's World at Station Square at Metrotown, sharing secret crushes, etc... Kaleb and I have known each other since grade 2, so when we were 7 years old... how we have changed, eh buddy??

Since high school, Kaleb and I partied it up as roommates in Victoria as we both attended school. We started a band together, put on rock shows, DJed together... all the fun stuff. Kaleb became a famous drag king, I moved back to Vancouver and before you knew it time had whizzed by and Kaleb moved to Toronto. We still have kept in touch over the years and I still consider Kaleb a dear friend even though we see each other once a year or less. Another cool thing: Kaleb's mom, Heather, shares the same birthday as my dad Gerry Sung! And it just so happened that this past December, Heather celebrated her 60th birthday and Kaleb decided to surprise her with Coco Cake cupcakes!! Hooray!!

Monkeys, dogs and cats in Scottish tams... Hee hee!! Dark chocolate cupcakes with cool peppermint buttercream, and fondant animals. I love the Scottie dog...

Happy Happy Birthday Mrs.Robertson! Today, Jan 7, is also my mom Linda's birthday-- so Happy Birthday mom!!! And Kaleb, here's to many more years of our friendship!!

Happy New Year!

2010. Hard to believe. I hope everyone had lots of fun over the holidays...! I always find it hard to go back to work, yes even if work is something like making cakes and cupcakes... the new year always makes me question "what am I doing with my life??, what could I do better!? What changes will I make?" so I will share with you something my hubby RT and I have developed: instead of exact resolutions, per se, we have come up with more of like a "mantra" for the coming year. For instance, my mantra for 2009 was... believe it or not..."RELAX 2009." To me, this meant trying not to take on too many commitments, concentrating on doing a few things well as opposed to many things fairly well. Let's just say RLX409(which it got shortened to-- "for 2009) will be making an appearance as RLX410 this year...

This year's fresh mantra (I stole this one from Rich): EXCELLENCE 2010. To me, it's going to mean to create to the best of my ability and craftswomanship, and to maintain a degree of excellence (hopefully) in most things-- eating habits, mind and body health, relationships... and to focus on doing things I really love and find... excellent. NERD. It's perhaps a daunting mantra, isn't it?? What is in store for old Coco Cake and sole proprietor L.K.Sung? We'll see how 2010 plays out!!

This was me pretty much all of December. Cupcake orders galore, and extras which I would eat throughout the day. Not cool, says my body. But sometimes I would be so busy that I would just eat cupcakes! Terrible for trying to maintain any semblance of a figure!!

The futomaki cake I made for my beloved Dad's birthday!! It was dark chocolate with salted caramel buttercream, decorated with fondant "seaweed", rice, and futomaki fillings...

A hamburger cake, which was a Christmas present!

I made oodles of these chai cupcakes with creamcheese frosting. So yummy.

EMOTICON cupcakes I made for Engine Digital. They wanted nerd themed cupcakes so I went with emoticons modeled after the ones on my hotmail email account...!

Perfectly Rosy Garden Party Cupcakes

Sandra had a very specific request for her sweet daughter's second birthday party: garden party themed, with two colour rosette buttercream tops! I loved how these turned out... vanilla cupcakes with vanilla buttercream! I added some pink fondant flower embellishments with white non-pareil candy dots, and green fondant leaves as accents. Sandra sent me a picture of the cupcakes with her daughter who is so cute and beautiful, the cupcakes all stacked up on a lovely cupcake stand! "Thank you for the wonderful job!" Sandra wrote to me!

I thought they turned out perfectly lovely with the two-colour rosette tops! They were fun to make too...
