While waiting for our plane back to Vancouver at the Los Angeles airport a few weeks ago, I impulse-bought Dave Eggers' book "What Is The What", a memoir of Valentino Achak Deng, a refugee in war-ravaged southern Sudan who, at seven years old, flees his village which is under attack, and walks with a group of young boys to the eventual safety of Kenya. On the way, they are targeted, murdered, eaten by lions, and all hope is lost that Achak's entire family has been massacred. A 7 year old boy family-less and alone walking across Africa, experiencing atrocity after atrocity, yet Achak grows into an upstanding citizen who eventually makes it to the United States to start a new life. Not exactly bedtime reading but I did happen to read it before bed each night.
I closed the book last night after reading the last page and thought about how lucky I was, and how thankful I felt for everything that I have...
On a Coco Cake related note, I made 20 DOZEN of these Thank You cupcakes for Elsa and Scott's dental office! They wanted to say thank you to many other dental offices that they work with which I thought was a pretty awesome gesture. I made vanilla cupcakes with pink vanilla buttercream, dark chocolate cupcakes and coconut cupcakes with creamcheese frosting and toasted coconut! A yummy trio of cupcakes and the word is the cupcakes were a major hit! Hooray!
