Up + Away: Cute Balloon Cake Topper DIY

Up, up and away! Tough to get cuter than balloons, I say. Balloons are magical, suspended in air, temporary floaty colored bubbles that bob up and down with the wind. Pretty much the cutest party invention ever. Slam balloons together with cake? Instant party! So here I present... balloon cake toppers!

You Will Need:

A craft circle punch
Some colorful paper
Scissors
Mini hole punch
Gluestick
Washi tape or regular old tape
Wooden BBQ skewers

I made a cute collection of red balloon cake toppers for little cool guy Banksy's 1st birthday party - sweet, simple and the perfect colorful addition for a modern birthday cake.

Make them in different sizes using different sized craft circle punches - or cut them out freehand with scissors! Balloony good times, guys! And thank you to Rachel for the super cute order!

And A Cool Time Was Had By All: My Cake Toppers Workshop!

Hooray! The amazing Erin of Collage Collage invited me to teach a cake toppers workshop as part of their Adult Craft Night series. I had to come up with some cute ideas to teach the attendees. I had a horse ribbon inspired cake topper in mind, and I wanted to do something with alphabet pasta letters, inspired by a super cute DIY I had seen on Oh Happy Day a few years back. I had mentally thought about (ok, let's say mind-spiraled) what I would make for weeks and then on the day of the workshop, I sat down and worked out what the projects would be, making them beforehand so I could do a cooking-show-style "voila!" reveal!

I was pretty stoked with what I ended up coming up with - these guys - Treat Yo Self alphabet pasta letter banner and You Rascal horse ribbon cake topper!

I baked up some chocolate cupcakes with vanilla buttercream and sprinkles for the workshop attendees, both to snack on while they worked and each attendee got to take one home in a cute little box, too!

What a cute bunch of crafty  ladies indeed (and a quite adorable helper, Erin G!) Adult Craft Night is such a fun way to blast away for a few hours and use your hands to create something cool. A nice break from computery internet-overload times, I would say! I want to sign up for the next one!

Can you spot Coco Cake Land in this pic? Yeah. The nerdball holding up a cake banner topper! I sure had a great time!
And take a look at these great projects my ladies made! Pretty sweet. I feel excited that all of those future birthday cakes will be dolled up by some very cute hand crafted cake toppers. Thanks again Erin for inviting me, and many thanks to my new cake pals who attended the workshop! Looking forward to doing another one in the future.

Coco Cake Land Lately

Follow Coco Cake Land on Instagram!  Plenty of behind the scenes cakey times and little snippets of Coco Cake Land life. The top photo features these crazy cute cake toppers by Little Cat Design Co for Sweet and Saucy Shop! My fancy photos were all ruined due to some glitchy computer irritation (I dunno what happened but I am bummed!) so all I have is this little instagram pic for now until I re-shoot - Rats!

Hope you're all doing great, cake pals - and happy happy Thanksgiving long weekend to my pie eating American readers and friends! My dream is to be invited to an American style Thanksgiving feast one year. How many pies are at your Thanksgiving dinner??

Drawing Is Fun: Handmade Custom Cake Toppers

I've been really loving working on hand drawn cake toppers lately for my cakes - I like it because it's something no one else can recreate, making them original and fun- and boy, colouring really provides me with some stress-relieving joy! I should invest in some colouring books...

This adorable set of yellow umbrella and raindrop buddies was created for Lauren's baby shower, hosted by her sisters Alissa and Naomi! I loved the yellow umbrella theme - a fresh and fun baby shower theme, don't you think? Alissa provided me with the invite and I created the toppers based around the umbrella theme. How cute are those blue drip drop cake topper buddies? Heehee!

Here's a super cute set of cake toppers to match a custom pirate cake I made for adorable Graydon's 5th birthday party! The neon parrot cake topper made me chuckle. I kind of want to make a parrot cake now. This is nuts, too - I made an awesome Where The Wild Things Are cake for Graydon for his very first birthday party - and now he's five! Where does the time go?

I adore how the custom toppers bring a cake to life. I loved making these cute little vintage-look ice skating buddies for sweet River's birthday cake. I made River a cupcake train cake a few years ago for his 5th birthday! I wanted to go ice skating and was craving hot chocolate with mini marshmallows instantly after drawing them. Gad, I'm impressionable! Doesn't the cake look extra billowy and "snowy" with the addition of the ice skaters? :)

And of course this cutie red fox playing the guitar for my good friend Miko's daughter Saya's birthday, based on an image in one of her favourite books. I can hear the plink and plunk of the acoustic guitar right now...

Ahh, too much fun! I love being able to offer something unique and cute, and something I really love doing - I've been drawing since I was a little kid. It's nice to be able to sit down and draw again. I forget I can do that after a long day of chasing after Teddy and baking, photographing and blogging in between!
